Graphic Score

Working Process

This is the final major project for my course, Sound Design. In this project, we were asked to create an entire soundtrack to one of the provided video clips, including all sound effects, foley and a musical score.

Before commencing the project, it's important to determine the mood and storyline of the video so I could know the general editing direction for the soundtrack.

I created a mood board for this video and put in the elements and colours that I thought this video would contain.

I then broke the video down into several key moments from an objective point of view, as well as analysed the mood of each scene as I understood it.

1.    Man rushing in the airport – fast-paced, feeling anxious and worried
2.    Man feeling sick and lying on the floor – stressed, scared
3.    Breathing and expression gradually regained calm and his body began to sink – despair and regret
4.    Wake up on a plane – confused, anxious
5.    Sandwich spoke and emergency oxygen mask dropped – panic, alert
6.    Falling from the sky – a short spike of fear then only anger left
7.    Cardiac Pacemakers and thunder – vehemence
8.    Death – calm, serene

The graphic score helped me to show the change in mood between key moments.

During the editing, in addition to using some of the features provided in Reaper, I used a plugin called Spitfire, which provides the sounds of many different instruments. I played and recorded those sounds by using the Virtual MIDI keyboard.

This was my first attempt at creating a proper audio track for a video.
