Group Project Proposal

This is the final group project for my course, Designing at the Intersection of Food and Technology. We think and reflect on existing design patterns within the Human-Food Interaction space and try to come up with innovative and provocative ideas.

My final group project design is an interactive locker box designed for delivered food storage. Our design is intended to address some of the safety and convenience issues that are often encountered when ordering delivery food. These problems relate to takeaways being stolen after being delivered, being mixed up with other people's takeaways, delivery drivers waiting for too long time, and food being left out too long and getting cold.

Our main target audiences are all the delivery drivers and consumers living in high-rise buildings, especially those who live in apartments or student halls.

It will be installed in the lobby of the high-rise building. Drivers can easily place the delivered food into any one of these compartments and leave straight away. The food will be locked in the locker box waiting for the consumers to pick it up.

For this project, I formed a team with Yidan Liu and Seyi Lee.

I was mainly responsible for sketching the exterior design of the locker box, defining a clear direction and setting goals for the project. Yidan was charging for making a small model of the design as our prototype. Seyi worked on the presentation video.

After confirming the topic, our group decided to follow the locker box idea that I proposed in the previous assignment. At the same time, I was also responsible for the exterior design of the locker box. Before I started the sketch, I identified some elements that wanted to be kept. For example, it needs to be a storage box that has many compartments; the contents of each compartment can be seen (the door needs to be transparent); it needs a digital screen for consumers to scan, etc.

I was also responsible for communication between the group and checking with the teacher as the project progressed. The attendance of my two group members was very low and I was not able to communicate effectively with them face-to-face. In order to catch up, I had several one-on-one sessions with my lecturer and sent the discussion to both of them after class.

In previous group projects, I usually just did what was assigned to me. This was the first time I took the initiative to take charge of leading my group forward.
